Shoulders are often referred to as “the carriers of burden.” We physically shrug, tighten, and brace our shoulders in response to stress, anxiety, or grief. In Chinese Medicine, the shoulders are connected to the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, which govern emotions like anger, frustration, and difficulty making decisions. We can also have referred pain in the shoulder from the liver, gallbladder, thyroid, and even gerd & acid reflux, and heart – specifically on left shoulder pain.
Somatically, shoulder tension may reflect the weight of responsibilities or unresolved emotions that we carry on our shoulders. Addressing these emotional undercurrents can be just as important as physical interventions.
This somatic practice is for relieving shoulder tension and fostering strength and stability. Later in the practice we will introduce some resistance, feel free to grab a resistance band if you so choose.
